Mauritius ranks 1st in Africa and 6th globally on 2017 Cybersecurity Index by ITU

07/07/2017

Mauritius is the best performer of the Africa region in terms of cybersecurity in 2017, according to the Global Cybersecurity Index and ranks 6th globally.

Cybersecurity is the set of laws and technologies that can be used to protect people and IT assets from attack.

The Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI), through an investigation realized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), measures Member States' commitment to cybersecurity in order to raise global awareness of the risks faced by corporations, governments and individuals. GCI analyses of each country’s level of development within five categories: Legal Measures, Technical Measures, Organizational Measures, Capacity Building and Cooperation.

Mauritius has been particularly successful in the legal and technical fields. The report highlights the Botnet Tracking and Detection project of the Computer Emergency Response Team of Mauritius (CERT-MU). The three main goals of  CERT-MU are to monitor security problems occurring within public and private sectors, secondly to provide guidance to adopt best practices and to warn and provide education on the latest threats..

In addition, capacity building is another area where Mauritius is functioning well. Indeed, the governmental computer security unit conducted 180 awareness sessions for some 2,000 civil servants in 32 ministries and government departments.
